Background Check Information

All persons who may have access to students must be fingerprinted.  Those persons who have not completed the full FBI fingerprints for our District need to be under the direct supervision of a South Burlington School District staff member and may not be left alone with students at any time.  See 16 V.S.A. ยง 251.

 The following types of individuals do not need to complete documents under the "Background Check Forms" section:

  • Employees from other schools who are here for supervised classroom observations, trainings, or meetings.

  • Parents/Guardians visiting ONLY for a lunch date, assembly, concert, or attending a class function such as a celebration, author's tea, or presentation and who are not alone with students.

  • Other individuals/positions to be clarified through the Human Resources Department. 

Level I:  The following positions require the completion of the Non-Paid Position Application and the AHS Vulnerable Population Check Form.  Identification verifying identity also must be provided.

  • Board Members.

  • Parent/Guardian/Adult classroom volunteer who will be directly supervised by a district employee and not left alone with a student.

  • Daytime Field Trip Parent/Guardian and any other adult traveling with students or involved with school sponsored activities that is supervised by a district employee and does not have unsupervised contact with students. 

  • Post secondary students who are here for a specific period of time for class observations and who are directly supervised by a district employee and does not have unsupervised contact with students.

  • Other individuals/positions to be clarified through the Human Resources Department.

Level II: The following positions must complete the Non-Paid Position Application or an Employment Application, the AHS Vulnerable Population Check Form, and complete the fingerprinting process. Identification verifying identity also must be provided.  All forms for fingerprinting are found below under the "Background Check Forms" section. 

  • Employees working for the District.

  • Student teachers and field experience students from post secondary institutions and programs.

  • Volunteers for all grades (PreK-12), School's Out, SB Rec Department and YMCA Volunteers who have unsupervised access to students.

  • Overnight or Field Trip Parents/Guardians and any other adults traveling with students on school sponsored activities that may have unsupervised contact with students. 

  • Parent/Guardian/Adult assisting with after-school, evening, or weekend events and that may have unsupervised contact with students.

  • Volunteer coaches for programs/activities such as, but not limited to: Drama, Odyssey of the Mind, Athletic Teams, and Girls on the Run.

  • Consultants, Instructors, Common Roots, and School-Based Clinicians.

  • Other individuals/positions to be clarified through Human Resources.
